How to Protect Asbestos Workers’ Family Members
Workers exposed to asbestos may put their family members in danger of Exposure to Asbestos. They can carry Asbestos home from work on their clothes, bodies, tools and other items, and then unknowingly expose their families to this hazardous substances , causing mesothelioma. This can also occur when the home and workplace are not separated, such as on farms.
The Workers’ Family Protection Act of 1992 (Public Law 102-522, 29 U.S.C. 671a), directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to study contamination of workers’ homes by hazardous substances transported from the workplace.
Preventative Measures in the Workplace
- use good safety practices to reduce exposure;
- Wear a suitable disposable dust mask to prevent inhalation of asbestos fibres
- leave soiled clothes at work;
- change clothes before leaving work;
- store nonwork clothes in separate areas of the workplace to prevent their asbestos contamination;
- shower before leaving work;
- do not take tools, scrap, packaging, and similar items home;
- inform workers of the risks to family members and educating as to preventative measures;
- launder work clothes separately;
- prevent family members from visiting the work area;
- Prohibit removal of toxic substances or contaminated items from the workplace;
- keep work areas and living areas separate;
- Properly storing and disposing of toxic substances on farms and in cottage industries
